My recent return to the gym after a l-o-n-g break has been a humbling reminder that progress isn't always linear. I’ve often talked about how my art always reflects my life journey — the one that, like yours, has rarely been a smooth ride. It's more like a rollercoaster; exhilarating highs when inspiration strikes, and frustrating lows when self-doubt creeps in, right?
But here's the thing: every word written, every sketch drawn, every note played, e-v-e-r-y push up — it all matters.
Even if it feels insignificant in the moment, every time you say “yes, I’ll give it it another go!” — it is a testament to your dedication and resilience. It's proof that you're showing up, doing the work, and refusing to give up.
As I walk out of the gym, drenched in sweat and, oftentimes, tear-filled eyes (those lunges, man!), I remind myself of the parallels I share with y'all in my workshops:
Embrace the Messy Middle: Just like attempting my first crunches in years – shaky and awkward — creativity is rarely a neat and tidy process. It's okay to have days when you feel stuck or uninspired. It's all part of the journey, both in the gym and in the studio.
Track Your Progress: Keep a journal, a sketchbook, or a digital folder where you can document your creative milestones, much like I track my reps and sets at the gym. It’s only been two weeks and I’ve gone from wobbly lunges to stable ones. Looking back on how far you've come can be incredibly motivating.
Share Your Journey: Connect with other creatives and share your experiences — the good, the bad, and the ugly, even the tears shed during a particularly grueling workout or a frustrating creative block. You'll be surprised how much your story can resonate with others. We're all in this together, finding strength and inspiration in shared vulnerability.
My goal at the gym isn't about weight loss or six-pack abs; it's about cultivating a sense of strength and confidence in my body, mirroring the strength I feel in my mind. But I couldn’t do it alone — I need the coach to guide me, challenge me, not give up on me.
I feel the same way about our creative journeys: our motivations and goals may differ, our path will be unique — simply because we are unlike anyone else — but we are all striving to find our own voice and nurture it. And you don’t have to do any of this alone!
We're all in this together, navigating the ups and downs of our creative process — and our personal journeys towards strength and self-expression.
So let's lift each other up, celebrate our wins, and keep creating, even when it feels hard.
As the brilliant artist Mary Anne Radmacher once said, "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'"
So, tell me: What small act of courage are you celebrating today? Share your win with me — let's inspire each other to keep going!

Hello my friend,
My recent return to the gym after a l-o-n-g break has been a humbling reminder that progress isn't always linear.
